Use a professional to insulate your loft
11-Jan-08
Homeowners have been advised to use a professional company when it comes to installing loft insulation.
Although many people may feel confident enough to carryout the work themselves, the National Insulation Association (NIA) warned that mistakes can be made.
The organisation pointed out that a professional insulator will ensure that the product does the job it is designed to do.
"It is always best to use a professional company who are aware of problems that can arise. In many cases grants are available which can make the cost of a professional installation very affordable. Even without the grants it is still cost effective," said Neil Marshall, chief executive of the NIA.
"If you pay for a professional installation they will ensure that the required depth of insulation is put into the loft and that the required pattern is followed by cross-laying over the joists.
"If the incorrect amount of insulation is used it will not prove effective and can lead to heat loss," he added.
The Energy Saving Trust claims that 15 per cent of heating costs can be lost through the roof of a property if it is not properly insulated.
